VLSI Design and Technology

Department of Electronics Engineering was started in the year of 1984. B. E. Electronics Engineering programme is accredited since 2003 and at present the program is accredited for 6 years. Through this journey of 40 years, the state-of-the-art infrastructure is developed with all facilities like e-class rooms and laboratories with the latest equipment, hardware, and software. To remain on pace with the latest technologies we have set up additional laboratories like Python Lab, VLSI lab with Cadence software (DST grant), and IoT lab (AICTE grant). The department is having experienced senior faculty. Out of 28 faculties, 17 are with Ph. D. qualifications. Since our institute is autonomous we have framed the curriculum by including the latest technology subjects like Python, Applied Machine Learning, e-commerce data analytics, and the Internet of Things, so that students are abreast with the latest technologies through our regular teaching-learning process. We ensure the overall development of our students by organizing academic initiatives in the department for research, innovations, skills enhancement, and interdisciplinary interactions. n addition to the regular curriculum, students can register for Honors in VLSI Design. Also, students can register for minors in another discipline.

Outcome-based learning is implemented in the teaching-learning process.  There is an IEEE subsection through which regular technical programs and competitions are organized. In the current scenario of COVID-19 webinars by experts and alumni are organized for students.

Best Practices

Best Practices of the Electronics Engineering Department

  • Curriculum Aligned with India’s National Technology Vision and Mission
The department ensures curriculum execution is aligned with India’s technology roadmap (supported by initiatives such as the Chips to Startup (C2S) program under the Semiconductor Manpower Development Scheme, enhancing relevance in the semiconductor and electronics ecosystem).
  • Industry-Relevant Curriculum Design
The curriculum is regularly updated based on stakeholder input, including feedback from industry experts, alumni, and academia, to match evolving technology and workforce demands.
  • Focus on Domain-Specific Skill Development
Continuous knowledge enhancement in PCB Design, VLSI, and Embedded Systems is encouraged through hands-on workshops, labs, certifications, and expert lectures.
  • Robust Industry Exposure
Students undergo a one-month industry internship in the 4th semester and a semester-long internship in the 8th semester, providing them with practical experience and industry readiness.
  • Project-Based Learning (PBL) Pedagogy    Emphasis is placed on project-based learning to cultivate innovation, problem-solving skills, and real-world application of theoretical knowledge among students across all levels.
  • Innovative Teaching-Learning Practices
Adoption of innovative pedagogy techniques such as flipped classrooms, simulation-based labs, blended learning, and active learning strategies in both theory and practical sessions
  • Financial Support for Student Projects
Dedicated budget provision for UG and PG projects ensures that students receive necessary resources to develop and prototype innovative solutions.
  • Global Exposure via IEEE Student Branch
Active IEEE Student Branch facilitates exposure to the global technical community through conferences, competitions, webinars, and networking opportunities.
  • Encouragement and Recognition of MOOC Learning
Students are supported and encouraged to pursue MOOCs on platforms like NPTEL, Coursera, and edX, promoting lifelong learning and certification in emerging technologies.

What is VLSI design and technology?

VLSI Design and Technology, or Very Large-Scale Integration, is a field of electrical engineering focused on creating   integrated circuits (ICs) by integrating thousands or even millions of transistors and other components onto a single   chip. It encompasses the design, fabrication, and testing of these complex microchips, which are essential components   in virtually all electronic devices.  In essence, VLSI design and technology involves:

    • Designing: Creating the blueprint of the integrated circuit, including the logical structure and
      physical layout.
    • Fabricating: Manufacturing the designed IC using semiconductor fabrication processes.
    • Testing: Ensuring the fabricated IC functions correctly and meets performance
      requirements.

Key aspects of VLSI design and technology:

Integration: VLSI allows for the integration of numerous transistors and other components onto a single chip  enabling   the  development of highly  complex and powerful  electronic systems.

Miniaturization: VLSI has driven the miniaturization of electronics, allowing for smaller, faster, and
 more energy-efficient devices.

Applications: VLSI technology is fundamental to various industries, including computing,
telecommunications, consumer electronics, automotive systems, healthcare, and more.
Design Automation: VLSI design relies heavily on Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools to
automate the complex design and verification processes.

Future Trends: VLSI is at the forefront of emerging technologies like AI, 5G, and the Internet of
Things (IoT), driving innovation in these fields.

In simpler terms, VLSI is the technology that allows us to put more and more computing power and
functionality into smaller and smaller chips, enabling the advanced electronics we use every day

What is the scope of VLSI design and technology?

The scope of VLSI (Very-Large-Scale Integration) design and technology is vast and continues to grow, encompassing the design and development of integrated circuits (ICs) that power everything from smartphones and computers to complex systems in automobiles, aerospace, and healthcare. With advancements in AI, IoT, and 5G, the demand for skilled VLSI engineers is surging, making it a promising career path with diverse opportunities.
